Free index finger gloves, designed in collaboration with Dario "THOKK" Magnani from Societa dei Vai.

THOKK model was primarly designed for use with one handed weapons such : rapiers, sideswords, messers and sabres - But many competitors and HEMA practicioneers use them for longsword, apreciating comfort of free movement of index finder.

THOKK GLoves are made from hot-shaped and then hardened styrogum covered with cowhide. The glove joint is built on the basis of a harmonica which provides excellent mobility at the same time sewn of several layers of 350N fabric which provides very good protection against possible hits.

This is what distinguishes our gloves from the competition is an excellent finger protection and phalanges on each side - even in case of hits "from the front"

Big Thumb, Great Protection

I absolutely LOVE the look of these gloves. Choosing the colors is awesome and they really stand out amongst the sea of standard black and your smelly, garden variety Lacrosse gloves. I have not tried the SPES Heavy Gauntlet, but from what I can tell the dexterity is better, the ventilation is better (the open palm allows air to swim around your hand) and the material is just as safe. I've been struck numerous times with a black fencer longsword and have never felt a sting.

They are quite stiff upon arrival, but after about week of constant breaking in, there were fine.

There are two negative issues worth mentioning that keep me from awarding 5 stars. One is that the wrist is not covered with styrogum or leather, and so is technically susceptible to injury if you were to be hit really hard. They just have what I assume is the jacket material (I have not been injured in such a way, however).

The second issue - and the only real downside to this glove - is that the thickness/hardness of the thumb makes performing Zwertchau difficult. Switching to thumb grip in general is a bit clunky, simply because the padding is so blocky and the area from the thumb to the wrist is pretty heavily padded. I basically "cheat" the grip the best I can, and can perform the movements fine - but my Thumb is not pressed against the flat of the blade like it technically should be. Perhaps after a few more months of beating, the thumb will soften a bit, but you'll still have the same shape to deal with.

Difficult to beat at this price point

Members of our club have tried Red Dragons, Sparring Gloves (original model), Neyman Pig Hoofs, and Neyman Thokks. In our experience you throw away your Red Dragons after you've used any Neyman gloves.

We recommend Thokks for our entry level HEMA kit, due to their combination of high protection and versatility. Unlike Red Dragons or the original Sparring Glove, you can use them easily with most rapiers (except for those with tight complex hilts), sabres, sideswords (except for those with a narrow knucklebow), and feders.

Thokks need a very solid workout to break them in, but after that they perform exceptionally well. The dexterity of the index finger makes a significant difference, and the cutout at the wrist helps them fit over thick sleeves and accommodate arm protection.

We haven't found anything better at this price point, and they have excellent longevity. You will definitely still be using these after three years. Fingers are important, protect them well.
